Mustang o regno di Lo, è una regione che fa parte del Nepal, nel nord-est del paese, un lingua di terra che si insinua in territorio Tibetano. Nella regione dell’ Annapurna risalendo verso nord la Kali Gandaki si trova questo regione dai paesaggi lunari con tradizioni antichissime. Aperto solo di recente ai trekkers (1992), il Mustang è abitato dal popolo Loba, ovvero “gente del Lo” di chiara origine tibetana. La religione è quella buddista tibetana della setta Sakyapa, riconoscibile nell’ architettura utilizzata nella costruzione dei Gompa dipinti a strisce grigie bianche e gialle che rispecchiano i colori delle montagne circostanti. L’itinerario del trekking risale le valli da Jomosom fino alla sua capitale Lo Manthang attraversando valli incontaminate e villaggi molto distanti tra loro che l’isolamento ha mantenuto integri. A differenza di altre zone del Nepal, il Mustang è visitabile quasi tutto l’anno da marzo a novembre, le montagne lo proteggono dai monsoni che non riescono a superarle, la regione è particolarmente secca.
